When Survivors Give Birth Workshop
When Survivors Give Birth is based on the important book by Penny Simkin and Phyllis Klaus (2004) of the same name. Trained and certified by the authors, Sharon Storton will present information on the short- and long-term effects of childhood sexual abuse, intimate-partner violence, and previous traumatic childbirth experiences, emphasizing the possible impact on childbearing women. Challenges in the client-caregiver relationship are thoroughly discussed, with much practical advice for improving trust and communication as well as self-help techniques to handle abuse-related distress.
Sharon is a Calgary-based registered psychologist in private practice, with over 20 years of experience in the healing arts. A DONA-trained doula, childbirth educator, and a former IBCLC breastfeeding consultant, with two graduate degrees in mental health and women's wellness, Sharon is an international speaker, writer, and advocate on the importance protecting the intersection of mind/body/spirit in birthing women.
