Standards of Practice

  • Continuous Support: Doulas provide consistent emotional and physical support throughout the birthing process.

  • Partner Engagement: Doulas support the partner’s role, ensuring they are actively involved without replacing their presence.

  • Client Autonomy: Doulas respect the client’s decisions, helping them communicate with their care team and adjust their birth plan as needed.

  • Team Collaboration: Doulas work alongside the healthcare team, complementing their roles without interfering in medical tasks.

  • Non-Medical Care: Doulas do not perform medical duties but focus on comfort, relaxation techniques, and emotional support.

  • Backup Arrangements: Doulas must arrange a backup plan with another qualified doula if they cannot attend the birth.

  • Referrals: For needs beyond their scope, doulas refer clients to other healthcare professionals.

Primacy of Clients' Interests: Doulas prioritize the well-being and needs of the client in all aspects of care.

  • Confidentiality: Doulas maintain client confidentiality, protecting personal and sensitive information shared in the course of their work.

  • Competence & Development: Doulas are committed to ongoing professional development through education and training to ensure high standards of practice.

  • Community Service: Doulas advocate for the profession and promote awareness of the benefits of labor support services to the public.

  • Fair Fees: Doulas set their fees in a fair, reasonable, and considerate manner, ensuring they are reflective of the services provided.
